How to Convert Kilograms to Pounds (Exact and Quick Methods)

Kilograms to pounds graphic showing 1 kilogram equals 2.20462 pounds

Last updated: October 2026

Short answer: to convert kilograms to pounds, multiply the kilograms by 2.20462. So 20 kg × 2.20462 = 44.09 lb. For a quick estimate in your head, double the number and add 10% of the result: 20 kg doubled is 40, plus 4, gives 44 lb.

The exact factor comes from the definition of the pound, which is exactly 0.45359237 kg. Flip that and you get about 2.20462 pounds per kilogram. Most people round it to 2.2, and for a lot of everyday jobs that’s fine. For others, like shipping charges or medicine doses, it isn’t.

The kg to lb questions I see come from courier counters, gyms, vet clinics and online stores selling into the US. Different stakes, same multiplication. (If you’re converting the other direction, the pounds to kg guide is coming next in this series.)

Why 2.20462 and not 2.2

One pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. So one kilogram is 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.2046226… pounds.

  • pounds = kilograms × 2.20462
  • quick version: pounds ≈ kilograms × 2.2

The gap between 2.2 and 2.20462 is about 0.2%. On a 5 kg bag of flour that’s 0.02 lb, which nobody cares about. On a 900 kg pallet, it’s about 4 lb. On a freight invoice, that can push you over a weight band.

How to convert kilograms to pounds, step by step

Say a courier desk is booking a parcel that weighs 12.5 kg, and the US carrier’s rate table is in pounds.

Step 1: Write down the exact weight

12.5 kg. Use the scale reading, not a rounded number from the booking form.

Step 2: Multiply by 2.20462

12.5 × 2.20462 = 27.558 lb.

Step 3: Check how the carrier rounds

Most carriers round up to the next whole pound for billing. So this parcel bills as 28 lb. If you’d used 2.2, you’d get 27.5 lb, which also rounds to 28. Same result here, but not always. Close to a boundary, use the exact factor.

Step 4: Sanity check with the double-plus-10% trick

12.5 doubled is 25. 10% of 25 is 2.5. 25 + 2.5 = 27.5. Close to 27.56, so no decimal slipped.

The mental shortcut, and when not to trust it

Double, then add a tenth of the doubled number. It works because 2 + 0.2 = 2.2.

  • 30 kg: 60 + 6 = 66 lb (exact: 66.14 lb)
  • 75 kg: 150 + 15 = 165 lb (exact: 165.35 lb)
  • 140 kg: 280 + 28 = 308 lb (exact: 308.65 lb)

It’s always a touch low, and the shortfall grows with the weight. I use it for gym plates and luggage. I don’t use it for anything that gets billed, dosed or certified.

Kilograms to pounds and ounces

Some uses want pounds and ounces, not decimal pounds. Birth weights in a maternity ward, for example, or a bakery selling into a market that labels in ounces.

Take 3.4 kg.

  1. 3.4 × 2.20462 = 7.4957 lb.
  2. Keep the 7 as whole pounds.
  3. Multiply the decimal by 16 (there are 16 ounces in a pound): 0.4957 × 16 = 7.93 oz.
  4. Answer: about 7 lb 8 oz.

The mistake I see is reading 7.4957 as “7 lb 5 oz”. The decimal is a fraction of a pound, not ounces.

Worked example converting 3.4 kg to 7 lb 8 oz using pounds and ounces

Kg to lb values I get asked about most

Kilograms Pounds Where I usually see it
1 kg 2.2 lb Bag of sugar, coffee beans
2 kg 4.41 lb Dumbbell, laptop with charger
5 kg 11.02 lb Flour sack, small parcel
10 kg 22.05 lb Pet food bag, carry-on limit
15 kg 33.07 lb Kettlebell, mid-size dog
20 kg 44.09 lb Barbell (standard men’s bar), cement bag
23 kg 50.71 lb Checked bag limit
25 kg 55.12 lb Rice sack, bumper plate
50 kg 110.23 lb Bulk feed sack
100 kg 220.46 lb Body weight, drum of oil

Where kg to lb goes wrong in real work

  • Vet clinics. Drug doses are often listed per kilogram, but some owners give their pet’s weight in pounds. Converting the wrong way, or rounding a 32 kg dog to “70 lb” when it’s 70.55 lb, is small here, but in reverse on a cat it’s a real dose error. Clinics I’d trust weigh in kg and never convert at all.
  • Online stores shipping to the US. Product pages list weight in kg, and the shipping plugin wants pounds. If someone types in the kg value without converting, every order is under-charged by more than half.
  • Gyms. Plates in a lot of gyms are marked in kg, programs written in lb. A 20 kg plate is 44.09 lb, not 45. Over a few plates per side, that’s a couple of pounds off the lift.
  • Airline baggage. 23 kg is 50.71 lb. Airlines quoting in pounds usually round the limit to 50 lb, so a bag at 22.9 kg can still fail at a counter that weighs in pounds.

Kg to lb in Excel or Google Sheets

  • Kilograms in A2: =A2*2.20462
  • Built-in function: =CONVERT(A2,"kg","lbm") (note “lbm”, which is pound mass)
  • Whole pounds and ounces: =INT(A2*2.20462) for pounds, =ROUND(MOD(A2*2.20462,1)*16,1) for ounces

Keep the exact column and round in a separate one. Billing disputes are easier when you can show the raw number.
